Below are the quick answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Do I need a credit card?

Having a credit card is a common requirement for renting a car because it serves as a form of payment and provides the rental car company with a way to secure funds in case of damage or additional charges, such as fuel, tolls, or late fees.

Debit cards are sometimes accepted, but they may come with additional restrictions or requirements, such as a higher minimum age for the renter or additional insurance coverage. It’s essential to check with the specific rental car company you plan to use to understand their payment policies and requirements.

Which documents are needed to pick up a rental car?

  1. Valid Driver’s License: You must present a valid driver’s license in your name. Most rental car companies require that you have held a driver’s license for a minimum period (often at least one year) and that it is in the Roman alphabet (or accompanied by an International Driving Permit if your license is not in the Roman alphabet).
  2. Credit Card: A credit card in the renter’s name is usually required for payment and as a security deposit. The credit card should have enough available credit to cover the rental charges and any potential additional fees or damages.
  3. Rental Confirmation or Reservation: It’s a good idea to have a copy of your rental confirmation or reservation, whether in print or on your mobile device, to provide to the rental car company. This document contains important information about your reservation.
  4. Identification: Some rental companies may request an additional form of identification, such as a passport or another government-issued ID. It’s best to check with the specific rental company to confirm their requirements.
  5. Insurance Information: If you have your insurance coverage or are purchasing insurance through the rental car company, you might need to provide proof of insurance or relevant insurance information.
  6. Age Requirements: Be aware that some rental car companies have minimum age requirements for renters. You may need to be a certain age, typically 21 or older, to rent a car, and there may be additional fees for drivers under 25.
  7. Additional Drivers: If you plan to have additional drivers, they may also need to provide their driver’s licenses and potentially be added to the rental agreement. There could be extra charges associated with additional drivers.

What is included in the rental charges?

  1. Basic Rental Rate: This is the cost of renting the car itself for a specified period, usually calculated on a daily or weekly basis.
  2. Mileage: Most rental agreements include a certain number of free miles or kilometers per day. If you exceed this limit, you may be charged an additional fee for each extra mile or kilometer driven.
  3. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): This is optional insurance that covers the cost of repairing or replacing the rental car if it’s damaged or stolen. If you decline this coverage and the car is damaged during your rental period, you may be responsible for the repair or replacement costs up to the full value of the car.
  4. Liability Insurance: Rental car companies typically provide liability insurance coverage as required by law. This coverage protects you in case you cause damage to another person’s property or injury to another person while driving the rental car.
  5. Taxes and Fees: Rental charges often include various taxes, surcharges, and fees, which can include airport fees, facility charges, and local taxes. These can significantly increase the total cost of your rental.
  6. Fuel: Rental cars are usually provided with a full tank of gas, and you are expected to return the car with a full tank. If you return the car with less fuel, you may be charged a higher rate for refueling.
  7. Additional Drivers: If you want to add extra drivers to the rental agreement, there may be a daily fee for each additional driver.
  8. Optional Extras: Rental companies offer various optional extras, such as GPS navigation systems, child car seats, and additional insurance coverage. These extras come with additional charges.
  9. Late Return Fees: Returning the car later than the agreed-upon time may result in additional charges. Be sure to check the rental agreement for the specific late return policy.
  10. Tolls and Traffic Violations: You are responsible for paying any tolls, parking tickets, or traffic violations incurred during the rental period. The rental company may charge administrative fees for processing these charges on your behalf.
